From Eureka

Jump to: navigation, search

I'm a mathematician at the University of California, Riverside. I love to explain math and physics. So, I have a long-standing interest in new forms of scholarly communication, open access and the problems caused by journal monopolies run by big publishers.

I'm a signatory of the Banff Protocol. More importantly I've tried to pioneer new models of scholarly communication, such as my electronic column This Week's Finds in Mathematical Physics, the moderated newsgroup sci.physics.research, my online courses — and most recently, the n-Category Cafe, a group blog with Urs Schreiber and David Corfield.

Eureka, set up by Blake Stacey with a lot of help by Bruce Bartlett, is another attempt to make life better for mathematicians who want to communicate without paying through the nose.

If you've ever enjoyed anything I've ever done, now is the time to pay me back. Even if you hate everything I've ever done, Eureka still needs your help.

At the very least: add to a few articles! Do you have a journal you love or hate? Contribute some information about it! Try to copy the template set by the biggest, best-worked-out articles. If you're feeling uninspired, just find out the board of editors and list it, or say a bit about the topic the journal covers.

If you're good at wikis, bots, html and the like, we really need you.
