Springer-Verlag was an academic publishing company purchased by Bertlesmann Media World, which was in turn acquired by the British investment groups Cinven and Candover in February 2004. The previous January, Cinven and Candover had bought Kluwer Academic Publishers, which was then merged with BertlesmannSpringer — now known as Springer Science+Business Media, or more commonly, Springer.
