John Ewing
From Eureka
John Ewing is the executive director of the American Mathematical Society. He has written a number of pieces on the problem of rising journal costs, the issue of open access, and other issues surrounding scholarly publication. He also maintains a blog[1] on mathematics journals.
In an article for the Chronicle of Higher Education entitled "Misdirection"[2], he argues that the drive for open access has taken attention away from the issue of high journal prices, which he regards as more important. He decries the idea, advocated by the Public Library of Science, that scholars should pay for publishing articles as a way to fund open access.
In an article for Nature entitled "The orthodoxy of open access"[3], he criticizes the open access movement and lists several alternative measures that should be tried:
- Provide free access to abstracts and references, fully linked.
- Provide full access to articles after a period of time.
- Grant authors greatly liberalized rights, to post or use their articles for any legitimate scientific purposes.
- Place all material in the public domain after 28 years.
For more details, see also Ewing's paper "A defense of caution"[4].
