Editor Info Prototype

From Eureka

Jump to: navigation, search

This is a prototype for how the editors' templates will look. An effort has been made to keep them small and simple, since this wiki is about journals, not editors. All the fields are optional. Please feel free to edit these tables how you see fit! This is just a rough start.

Discussion occurs on the Talk:Editor Info Prototype page. If you want to cycle though various versions of this template, click on history above. To see how the journal info might look, go to Journal Info Prototype.

How it will work

There are a number of different ways to present this data; please read below. In the basic scheme, there will be a template called Editor Info. To use this template on an editor's page - it isn't necessary, just "nice" - the wiki contributor will add the following to the source for A. Einstein's page:

 {{Editor Info
  | Image = [[Image.jpg]]
  | Full Name = Albert Einstein
  | Works at = Institute for Advanced Study
  | Homepage = URL}}

Note that the 'Edits for' tag is not entered by the wiki contributor. It is derived data and is, in theory, automatically fetched from the data on journals. All the fields are optional.

A. Einstein
Full Name : Albert Einstein
Works at : Institute for Advanced Study
Edits for : Do Eureka search
Papers at ArXiv : link
Homepage : link

This is how they will look at the moment. Inline queries are not fully functional in SMW 0.4, so to dsiplay the journals A. Einstein edits for the user clicks on the magnifying glass and gets taken to Special:SearchTriple with A. Einstein's name passed as a parameter.

A. Einstein
Full Name : Albert Einstein
Works at : Institute for Advanced Study
Edits for :
(According to Eureka's data)
Journal of K-Theory, Differential Geom. Appl.
Papers at ArXiv : link
Homepage : link

This is how it will look when we upgrade to SMW 0.7. The journals A. Einstein edits for are obtained via an inline query.

The overwhelming majority of these templates won't have images, so they'll look something like this:

No graphical template option

There is another choice to present this data - no graphical templates. That's because the information above normally occurs in a wiki page anyway. In this method, the page for A. Einstein will contain normal english text, with an optional template call to which performs a query on the journals he edits for, and returns an english result. For example,

 Albert Einstein is a mathematician who works at the [[Institute of Advanced Study]].

 {{Journals edited}}

 His homepage is [http://www.einstein.com einstein.com].

will produce:

Albert Einstein is a mathematician who works at the Institute of Advanced Study.

According to Eureka data, A. Einstein is an editor of Journal of K-Theory and Differential Geom. Appl..

His homepage is einstein.com.

Bots and no graphical template option

We might also employ bots to help us out. Every couple of days, a bot runs through the wiki, looking for any empty links to editor pages (made by using the Journal Info template on a journal's page, and the wiki contributor subsequently not bothering to fill in the editor's page). For instance, perhaps G.B. Navalagi appears as an editor for the Antarctic Journal of Mathematics, but his page is empty.

The bot then simply adds the {{Journals edited}} template to his page. So his page will be a stub, whose source will simply contain

  {{Journals edited}}

I.e., his page will simply look as follows:

According to Eureka data, G.B. Navalagi is an editor of Antarct._J._Math.

Someone might come later and edit G.B. Navalagi's page. This editor could then optionally upgrade the {{Journals edited}} template to a graphical {{Editor Info}} template, or just leave things as they are.
