Birkhäuser began as a small printing shop in Basel in 1879, founded by Emil Birkhäuser. Initially it published primarily regional literature, but Birkhäuser's sons expanded its scope to academic journals and reference books in the 1920s, later progressing to textbooks and monographs in the natural sciences. In the 1940s the scientific segments were expanded considerably and soon gained international recognition. Publications in civil engineering followed as did further important journals and book series in the ensuing years.

Birkhäuser opened a branch office in Boston USA in 1979.

Mathematicians know Birkhäuser from the green covers of its books.

Birkhäuser was bought by Springer[1] in 1985.[2]
